Wegovy Lawsuits
Wegovy, a drug widely used for diabetes management and weight loss, has been associated with serious stomach and intestinal complications. People have filed lawsuits nationwide alleging that Wegovy caused stomach paralysis and other significant gastric issues.
In 2022, the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) issued alerts about the potential risks of intestinal obstruction related to both Wegovy and its counterpart, Ozempic. The FDA had received numerous reports of gastrointestinal problems or blockages from people who used these drugs.
What are the Wegovy Lawsuits About?
The lawsuits target Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, accusing the company of failing to adequately warn users about the possible severe gastrointestinal side effects, such as stomach paralysis or gastroparesis. The legal actions also contend that the company was negligent in their testing and ongoing surveillance of the drug after it was approved, compromising patient safety.
Individuals who have experienced gastroparesis or stomach paralysis or other severe side effects from Wegovy might be eligible to seek compensation from the manufacturer.

Wegovy Class Action Lawsuit or Multidistrict Litigation (MDL)
As of February 2024, all Wegovy-related lawsuits have been consolidated into a Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) in one federal court. This consolidation is similar to a class action but allows each claim to be evaluated individually in court.
Currently, numerous patients across the country have filed legal claims under this MDL, citing injuries from Wegovy.

About the Wegovy Lawsuits
Those affected are pursuing compensation for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages related to their health complications. They are also advocating for stricter regulatory oversight and clearer, more detailed drug labeling to prevent future incidents.
Wegovy and Stomach Paralysis or Gastroparesis
Gastroparesis happens when a medication like Wegovy damages stomach muscles and nerves causing them to stop moving food through the intestines. Symptoms can include chronic nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and chronic diarrhea; all potentially leading to malnutrition and dehydration.
What is Semaglutide or GLP-1?
Semaglutide is an FDA-approved medication for type 2 diabetes and is marketed under the names Ozempic and Wegovy for weight loss. A similar formulation known as Mounjaro has also been introduced. These drugs function by simulating a hormone called GLP-1 that regulates appetite and food intake in the brain.
Wegovy Side Effects
Wegovy and similar weight loss medications have been associated with various side effects. Notable among these are:
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Common problems include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain, typically more intense at the start of treatment.
- Gastroparesis: A less common but serious condition where the stomach empties slowly, leading to nausea, vomiting, and bloating.
- Deep Vein Thrombosis: This is the formation of blood clots in the body, including pulmonary embolisms.
Patients should closely monitor their health and consult healthcare providers to manage side effects effectively.
