Zantac Ranitidine Lawsuits in Florida
RECALLED FOR CANCER RISK
If you’ve ever used brandname Zantac or a generic ranitidine medication for heartburn, you could be at a higher risk of getting cancer. If you’ve already been diagnosed with cancer after taking Zantac or ranitidine, then you deserve compensation from the drug makers who put your life in danger.
FDA Recalls ALL Zantac and Ranitidine Because of Cancer Risk
On April 1, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled ALL prescription and over the counter (OTC) ranitidine heartburn drugs from the market because of a well-known cancer-causing chemical called NDMA. The FDA told the companies that make ranitidine and Zantac to stop selling it immediately. Stores like Walmart, Walgreens, Publix, CVS, and Rite Aid took it off their shelves in a rush to protect consumers.
FDA Tells People to Stop Taking Zantac
The FDA told consumers to stop taking any form of the drug (liquids, tablets, capsules), to throw it away, and not to buy any more Zantac or ranitidine. The FDA advised patients taking a prescription version of ranitidine/Zantac to speak to their doctor about a safer alternative.
How to Preserve Evidence for a Zantac/Ranitidine Case
If you still have Zantac or Ranitidine, do not throw it away. If you still have receipts showing that you purchased Zantac or ranitidine, do not throw the receipts away either. If these medications harmed you or caused cancer, you’ll have to prove that you purchased the product and this will be key evidence.

How Can Zantac Cause Cancer?
The active ingredient in Zantac, Ranitidine, creates a compound called N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) when exposed to the digestive system; during the manufacturing process and over time under normal storage conditions. NDMA is a well-known cancer-causing agent. The World Health Organization has stated that there is “conclusive evidence that NDMA is a potent carcinogen.”
NDMA exposure has been shown to:
- Exacerbate existing but dormant cancers
- Promote cells to develop into cancer
- Reduces the body’s ability to combat cancer.
It’s only known use is to create tumors in laboratory animals for scientific testing.

What is Zantac or ranitidine?
Zantac (ranitidine) belongs to a group of drugs called histamine-2 blockers. It works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces. H2-blockers are available both over-the-counter (OTC) and with a doctor’s prescription. H2-blockers are used to treat conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid or where acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus.
OTC Zantac or ranitidine has been commonly used to relieve and prevent heartburn, acid indigestion, and sour stomach. Prescription strengths are used to treat and prevent more serious conditions or ulcers in the stomach and intestines.
